I am new to shopping for silk, what do I need to be aware of ?
Silk sheets, pillowcases, pajamas and accessories are a wonderful investment in your health and overall wellness. But there is a wide variety of items out there in the market in terms of both quality and price. In fact, some items marketed as “silk” are not even 100% silk! At Perla Silk, we believe in educating our clients so they realize the value and quality our products deliver. In fact, we encourage you to do your research! Of course, we’re always pleased to answer your questions.
Mulberry silk comes from cocoons of a specific species of silkworm -- bombyx mori -- whose diet consists of leaves from the mulberry tree. The environment of these silkworms is carefully controlled and monitored to allow the larvae to spin threads that are considered the best on Earth. These luxurious threads are finer, smoother and consistently colored than any other variety of silk. More than just beautiful, mulberry silk fibers are even stronger than steel fibers of the same diameter. All of our products are made from 100% pure mulberry silk from Vietnam.
My silk product tore! How do I prevent this?
Silk is strong and durable, but once the strands are compromised by a small tear, it can quickly become a big problem. Use extra caution when laundering your silk as small nicks in the plastic parts of your washing machine or dryer can catch on the fabric. (This is why we recommend using mesh laundry bags).
Silk can also be snagged by rings, earrings, and other jewelry, zippers, Velcro, hooks on clothing, and sharp surfaces. Other considerations are rough skin (especially on feet), long or broken nails (hands or feet) and pets. Facial hair or general hair stubble can cause possible pilling over time that can wear and thin the fabric in areas and can lead to tears. Besides tears in your silk, other damage can occur without proper care. Bodily fluids may be unavoidable (drool or otherwise); spot treat accordingly before laundering for the best results. Stains do not constitute as product defects and stained items will not be accepted as returns.
What detergent should I use for silk ?
We recommend using a detergent specially formulated for silk, which is gentle yet cleans effectively. Fine Silk and Wool Detergent can be used for machine washing, hand washing, and to pre-treat stains.
